Obama: “Did I screw up in this situation? Absolutely.”

by Katherine Miller on February 4, 2009

President Obama refreshingly calls himself out:

“Did I screw up in this situation? Absolutely. I’m willing to take my lumps,” Obama told NBC’s Brian Williams, one of five interviews he gave yesterday afternoon. Obama told the network anchors that there are “not two sets of rules” for people, and said that average taxpayers deserve to have public officials who pay their taxes on time.

A little crisp and clean with just hint of fizz, right? Nevertheless, let’s dust off Blago’s Honest Cue Card to ask the pertinent question:

Illinois Governor Impeachment

Everyone literally misplaced their minds and wandered around for weeks aimlessly in September over John McCain’s familiarity with Bristol Palin’s OB/GYN, but — call me foolish — doesn’t the White House have access to tax records? Like, easy access? Wouldn’t that be among the first things you’d look at?

The entire process has severely stalled the transition, as well as delivered a roundhouse blow to Obama’s Health Care Czar of Universality and Goodness and Gaiety. Unfortunate, but were the tax records not examined closely, or did they assume they’d be ignored? Either way the withdrawals come as a completely avoidable, though not crippling setback to the first 100 days.
