Mike and I both wrote Hustler columns about Greek life on Sunday, but mine ran today (because sometimes the sun goes round the moon, so I went and saved the best for last, like one does). Anyway, I’m glad they didn’t run together, because you might think we have the same point but we don’t. Mike’s worried about individuals on this campus, I’m worried about Vandy’s comparative advantage:
Instead of killing Greek life and performing this complex act to prove how much the campus treasures diversity, why isn’t Vanderbilt trying to bridge diversity and Greek life? [...]
Thus Vanderbilt sells an image of itself, constructed in a vacuum at odds with reality. That image creates false hopes and an unnecessary mystique around Greek life, as though it’s some dirty word to be avoided, and something that must be mitigated by Vanderbilt’s academic upgrade.
Basically, shocker, diverse kids can be Greek too. Stop hiding Greek life, people like it. Do you really want to be Duke in all its bore you with politically correct discussion of obscure politics at a Christmas party instead of skiing or traveling? Etc. Etc.
