Unknowns skewer Hollywood self-righteousness

by Mike Warren on October 3, 2009

I’m stealing these videos from Allahpundit, but it’s too good not to post here. Here’s a link to the original Funny or Die video, which is the best representation since the Roman Polanski petition of how out-of-touch the rich and famous of La-La Land are with normal Americans. You need to watch the original to get the parodies, but the basic premise is a “fake” PSA where cool people like Will Ferrell, Donald Faison (of Scrubs), and Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (of Reno! 911) talk about how insurance companies are getting a bad rap. The comedy comes from the irony, since we all know health insurance companies have all the money and are mean and stuff. It would be a hilarious concept if…the object of derision were something more sinister (like the government) and the cast weren’t led by one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors.

Which leads to these two parodies. The first is a great frame-by-frame parody that targets the actors; it already has over 120,000 hits on YouTube (not bad, considering the Ferrell video has the star power and name-brand of Funny or Die to reach more people). The second is more of an attack on government-run health care, and I think it does much better at making a political point. Bottom line: this is the kind of thing conservatives need to be doing more of online: funny, pithy videos, articles, etc, that are based within the pop culture, even if it makes fun of the icons of that culture. Even though Will Ferrell’s still a hot commodity (though maybe not after Land of the Lost), even the biggest Ferrell fan can see the ridiculousness of the original video.
