Too-ra-loo: Listening to Irish trad

by Mike Warren on September 8, 2009

DSC01721Finally got around to hearing some great trad last night! Galway is a sort of urban center for trad, or traditional Irish music. I’ve been itching to hear some, but it’s hard to get a group of people to the right places. My roommate Todd and I ended up at Tigh Coili, a great little place near Shop Street that was just the ticket for a great trad session. This session featured a a fiddle, an accordian, uilleann pipes, a tin whistle, a bouzouki, and a bodhran. The pipes player kept time by stomping his foot, which many of us listening did as well. To get an idea of what I mean by “traditional Irish music”, check out this video at YouTube.

It was pretty amazing to hear it and see it up close; the musicians were just sitting at a table in the front corner, drinking beer and talking to each other in between songs. As I told Todd at the time, I could stand and listen to that music all day.

My next stops to see music are Murphy’s and Crane’s but that will have to be tomorrow or Thursday; I’ve got class in the morning.
