In response to President Obama’s speech in Cairo this morning, Hassan Fadlallah (lawmaker for Lebanon’s Hezbollah) said:
The Islamic world does not need moral or political sermons.
Fadlallah and I are probably not on the same thought train, but I do agree with this one sentence of his response. Obama covered many bases with his speech to the Islamic world, and he received good responses from all sides. I thought it was a bit preachy at parts (which is not really a shocker), and unfortunately, I do not think the majority of the Islamic world is completely open to all of his advice. One of his goals, I am sure, was to show the Islamic countries that he wanted to turn a new page in United States foreign policy. He kind of threw America under the bus in the process, which was disappointing.
On this morning’s “Good Morning America,” Diane Sawyer asked for Sean Hannity’s opinion on the speech, dubbing him a “powerhouse among conservatives.”
Hannity started off on the right track, calling Obama’s speech a part of his “apology tour,” but then, instead of reviewing the speech, he listed off all of the things that Obama did not say. No matter what Sawyer threw at him, he chose to read off of his laundry list of petty political points (why bring up the Georgetown cross incident?) rather than address the topic and use the relevant facts that he could easily have at his disposal. Yes, ABC was ridiculous about it, but Hannity’s response was a little embarrassing for conservatives.
This response was typical Hannity too. I used to be obsessed with him in high school: I listened to him on 97.1 FM Talk every day on my way home from school. I pretty much got down on my hands and knees begging my dad to take me to his Freedom Concert when he came through St. Louis with Oliver North. After awhile, though, I realized that while he throws a lot of great facts out there, Sean Hannity often misses the point. I don’t know if he actually can’t see it, or if he just can’t address certain questions that he has at hand.
It’s great that conservatives can unite behind him, but I don’t know that he should be one of our “powerhouses” if we want to have any future in this country.
