I take it back.

So, I have to recant my previous post that implied I was happy with politics in my lovely home state of Kentucky.

To be more specific, it is the local press that I have an issue with.   Louisville’s Courier Journal ran an article today concerning alleged campaign finance violations for the 2007 gubernatorial campaign of former Republican congresswoman Anne Northup. While Kentucky has recently gone red, Louisville tends to be a fairly liberal stronghold, and the Courier Journal is no exception to this bias.

Northupwas a 5 time congresswoman from Kentucky’s 3rd district, and held a position on the Appropriations Committee.  However, even when she had long shot opponents that were under qualified, the Courier Journal endorsed her opposition.  After being defeated by Democrat John Yarmuth, Northup ran for the office of the Governor and was defeated in the primary.  The accusations concern this campaign.

The main problem with the article is that it is essentially a non issue.  The donations in question are of nominal amount, and the article even admits that every one was almost immediately returned by the campaign.  This article is merely another example of a liberally slanted paper attempting to create negative coverage on a strong, Republican politician.  This is demonstrated by the article’s one sentence reference to campaign finance accusations towards Lt. Governor Steve Henry, who is a Democrat.  The article even admits that these charges are ‘lengthy.’  Where is the article covering these actually merited complaints?

All in all, I should not be surprised by the unnecessary coverage on a Republican politician.  In this time of change, however, I suppose I was just too hopeful.
